Review:

Not since the death of Ron Weasley have I had a book hangover, but after Maybe One Day I couldn’t think, let alone read, for a few days.

Recently, a little girl in my town was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive type of cancer that hit hard, not only in her immediate family, but for the entire town. Maybe One Day invoked many of the same feelings in my that I had when I learned that this particular little girl was sick. It was a heart-wrenching story that I ugly cried though in certain parts.

That being said, there were reasons why I gave this story four stars instead of five:

Zoe’s relationship in the beginning of the story was ill-placed and added nothing to the overall content. While I could appreciate the slow decline in Zoe’s life until she learns that her best friend has leukemia, I found it unnecessary and a bit distrasting. By page 100, I had forgotten it ever existed.

Livvie’s reaction to finding out that she has leukemia could have been a bit more epic. She was shocked at first, shocked to the point at which I think she forgot to feel feelings about anything at all. And yes, she cried a bit, but she’s seventeen. I would have lost my ever-loving mind, but no. Here comes Livvie all cool and collected about the whole thing. Like she’s not a kid looking death in the face.

Calvin, as the male lead – if you will, wasn’t really much of anything. I get that he was supposed to be the BMOC, but I had no feelings to him whatsoever. Usually, I fall half in love with the male leads in stories, but he just didn’t cut the mustard for me.

Overall, I think that this book was great and, though it had its shortcomings, it was a worthwhile read.

Synopsis:

Zoe and her best friend, Olivia, have always had Big Plans: They’ll tour the world as prima ballerinas and live in a swanky Manhattan apartment (where they’ll hang out with their fabulous boyfriends, of course). But when they’re cut from the ballet company, their plans for the future evaporate. Suddenly, Zoe’s dodging cheerleaders who want her and Olivia to go out for the squad, and Olivia’s got a crush on Calvin Taylor, who Zoe can’t stand.

Zoe can’t imagine anything worse happening . . . until Olivia gets sick. Really sick. Suddenly, not being able to dance is the least of their problems.

Olivia has always been the nice one, the happy-go-lucky one. Zoe has always been the snarky one, the look-on-the-dark-side one. But when your best friend is in the hospital, you better learn to step up fast. Now Zoe needs to put on a brave face and be the positive one. Even when Zoe isn’t sure what to say. Even when Olivia misses months of school. Even when Zoe starts falling for Calvin.

The one thing that keeps Zoe moving forward is knowing that Olivia will beat this thing, and everything will go back to the way it was before. It has to. Because the alternative is too terrifying for Zoe to even imagine.
